Thien Hau Temple interior Chinatown Saigon

Ho Chi Minh City is a giant puzzle of neighborhoods, each carrying a unique character. While District 1 is known for colonial architecture and modern skyscrapers, taking a short ride west brings you to Cholon (Chợ Lớn). Spanning District 5 and District 6, Cholon is Vietnam's largest Chinatown, boasting a rich heritage, bustling wholesale markets, and historic temples.

1. The Traditional Cyclo Experience

There is no better way to explore the atmospheric streets of Cholon than riding in a traditional Vietnamese Cyclo (xích lô). A cyclo is a three-wheeled bicycle taxi where the passenger sits in a comfortable front cabin, and the driver pedals behind.

Riding in a cyclo allows you to travel at a peaceful, leisurely pace. It gives you an unobstructed, open-air view of the historic shop-houses, vibrant street vendors, and aromatic herb shops that define Chinatown, without the rush of modern motorized traffic.

2. Thien Hau Temple: A Spiritual Sanctuary

One of the oldest and most beautiful cultural highlights in Cholon is the Ba Thien Hau Temple. Dedicated to Thien Hau, the Chinese Goddess of the Sea who protects sailors and fishermen, this temple was built in 1760 by Cantonese immigrants.

Stepping inside, tourists are greeted by the mesmerizing sight of dozens of massive, spiral incense coils hanging from the ceiling. These coils burn slowly for up to a week, drifting fragrant smoke through the courtyard as sunlight rays break through the roof. The temple features intricate porcelain dioramas decorating the roofline, depicting scenes of classical Chinese theater and folklore.

3. Binh Tay Market: The Wholesale Hub

At the heart of Cholon's commerce is Binh Tay Market. Built in the late 1920s with a beautiful blend of French engineering and traditional Chinese architectural motifs, this massive market features a central clock tower and a tranquil inner courtyard.

Unlike Ben Thanh Market, which is heavily geared towards retail, Binh Tay is a major wholesale market. Walking through its narrow aisles, you will witness the energetic pulse of local traders buying and selling spices, dried seafood, clothing, and household goods in bulk. It is a fantastic window into the commerce that drives the city.
